Music Like Ideas

Post-Punk was a thing right?  😉  See if you can tell which band this poem alludes to if you can.  Might be fun.

Arcane Spellcaster: Ak-Creations- Shadow Danciing

Music Like Ideas
by Michael Romani

Coming from a time when
Music sounded like ideas
It was a maxim of then
That life should be more than showbiz

In all of its monumental severity
The sun shone its searing light
Resting on the laurels of near history
Joy's division filled the night

It's a cold dark matter
To quietly observe the integration
As all of our illusions shatter
Shed in the moments of disintegration

Alien shards of smithereens
Complexities called human beings
Post-Industrial provocations
Are primeval in our incantations

Dimensional slippage turns to fixation
In the blips and echoes of otherness
It's a cold architecture of fascination
Felt like rituals of space, chilled and cavernous

Like all music, it's a hope of folk music
Like all music, it is a type of folk music
Less heard than sonorously felt
Deep inside layers of a post-modern melt

An Obsession of Shadow

The challenge for the 13th day of Na/GloPoWriMo is to write something spooky or somewhat creepy.  To me, there is maybe nothing more creepy than the shadowed, dark side of human nature.

Haunted Swamp & Hunt - From Under A Shadowed Moon

An Obsession of Shadow
by Michael Romani

Hiding in the shadows where it's safe
The others nearby are not so safe
I flee as I kill as the Wolf of God
Across the many land that I have trod

Leaving a savaged trail of blood
Boots caked with mire including mud
Notes scribbled on my obsession
Manifested darkness lacking compassion

All of the villains and anger without blame
Troubled babbles uttered without name
Palm read as if doing so reveals all
Even the tiniest secrets you wish not to recall

Building ships that were never meant to sail
Memories lost within nuances of sacred detail
It's like a ghost walking through the room
Madness returns refreshed yet hidden in the gloom

We mortals walk as both angel and as beast
The world demands and we become the least
Burying the lust and avarice just below
Never daring to reveal what the world shouldn't know

If you can't endure the nightmare, don't sleep
If you can't embrace the tears, don't weep
Some of us have walked this for a lifetime
It's not lost on us that this is the worse crime

We need not live on the sway of the fulcrum's swing
Instead we can live fully with the scorpion's sting
There in the intimate secrets of bio-electricity
We can unlock the choir of Lucifer's eccentricity

All men, or most men, live as slaves to their desire
Pursuing this until our souls are licked by Hell's fire
Rising up for the suffrage of pushing for a better living
More's the pity, it seems, that life so unforgiving

Nostalgia for Guantanamo (Reposted)

Attempting to work out the WordPress formatting glitch for Na/GloPoWriMo Day 11 on a place of origin:

Little Havana

Nostalgia For Guantanamo
by Michael Romani
Nostalgia beats as a fond memory
Of lived love and hearth of family
Fondness of the heart grows in absence
Often deeper than it grows in presence
Brothers and sisters joined in singularity
Laughing and crying at the same hilarity
We are joined together by a place
We are bonded together a we embrace
The Western and Eastern banks of Guantanamo Bay
At a handful of beaches we’d splash and play
Few of us knew that Columbus landed at Fisherman’s Point
Or that many of name  of those who had come before to anoint
All the many places we committed to our memory
As one large and ever growing extended family
John Paul Jones Hill oversaw the journeys of us all
While most happenings happened on Windward as I recall
Both rainforest and cacti were fields of play
Guantanamera was a hit once so they say
Interestingly a naval base embraces natural history
Protecting the flora and fauna of rare endemicity
And perhaps it’s that uniqueness that flavors us
As willing to stick our hearts and courage out just because
Of all those little things that come to shape our youth
Like a singular hold on living out our best truth
The cactus curtain separated those living in freedom
From those living under the horror of that revolution
Opuntia and landmines filled that rugged no man’s land
Each side certain that the Curtain held the upper hand
Most of us Pirates attended William T. Sampson schools
Where we began to grow up and break the rules
A one of a kind experience for the children of those who protect
And most it, preserved in the Guantanamo Public Memory Project
Semi arid, we grew up there on the dust and not a lot of rain
And learned that to conserve was more about life than pain
When water was cutoff by that brutish Cuban nation
We learned to get by and thrive through desalination
What I remember a lot of was all the water just in reach
There at Family, Cable, Glass and mostly Windmill Beach
All of the lessons such a life had to readily teach
At Hidden, Blue, Cuzco, Niknik and Ferry Landing Beach
It’s true that no man steps into the same river twice
But looking back, mostly what I remember is very nice
Riding horses out on the hillside and coral trails
We knew freedom, love and friendship in our best tales
Small town living as we grew restless then island hopped
Partying and carrying on until we finally dropped
But the best of things has been an incredible extended family
That for this lifetime has kept us in the best and truest company

Filthy Habits

It seems to me that most of humans have a little duality in our nature.  I could be wrong.  I often am.

The Mad Circus 4 Halloween- He Had Demonic Aspirations of Flight..

Filthy Habits
by Michael Romani

The beast seeks the dark
The angel seeks the light
The physician said with a snark
From the confines of his sight

Looking deep into the eyes
As widows to the soul
What we do for love's surprise
Each of us in our consigned role

The Devil's apprentice does not know
What she's meant to be
Hiding there in the shadow
Sobbing uncontrollably

Filthy habits we try to quit
Looking for a way though this
Hoping for happiness, just a bit
Silently sealed with a kiss

A city of strangers
Knows no end
Streets filled with dangers
Wishing for a friend

Our appetites are for destruction
Leading us where we haunt
Understanding our solemn introduction
In favor of what we want

Some lead into the night
Enigmatically waiting to die
It would be crueler if we might
Live wanting someone to suffer as we cry

Borne there in our grief
We conjure depths of vision
Struggling to be nothing or find relief
The blood on my teeth knows my decision

Sitting here alone by firelight
Dreaming of my faraway
Wishing to get this one thing right
There is familiarity in this day

Relative Complicity

Na/GloPoWriMo Day 12 asks that we who take up the challenge of finding something dull that we’re willing to give away.  Well, sorry, but I’m twisting this into something that can never be owned, only given and that is so extraordinary that it can never become truly routine or dull.

Theater On the Hill - An Irish Celtic Evening - Moondoll and I Talking Too

Relative Complicity
by Michael Romani

There is something to this accidental complicity
Of developing an extraordinary routine of simplicity
And it seems that despite the great distance
Our attraction finds it's deep persistence

It seems that in talking together over the phone
We find a oneness that we will never again be alone
Because despite whatever distance there may be
There is always a bit of me in you and you in me

It's not really a thing of any great mystery
Your words of love pull me stronger than gravity
Einstein found that love was the greatest power
And in so pronouncing found his greatest hour

In this world filled with the good and the mean
To me it's always seemed a little bit obscene
That there are those among us who find it routine
To find an imposture of love as their scene

Never realizing all of the beauty and rarity
Of a true love recognized with a bit of clarity
Knowing that this is the thing worth holding onto
This thing that keeps growing between me and you

Though it's true there is some considerable distance
Physically between us, still there is a steady insistence
That we are really only just as far as each other's heart
And every time we speak, you and I know that from the start

You there in your soul are so very breathtakingly beautiful
Making each moment spent a spectacular kind of wonderful
As we grow together I see how you are of a love shown
That makes me brave enough to dare all that is unknown

You have shared you as ever unfolding and being tender
Helping me be strong enough to grow into surrender
And I know that our journey is and will never be routine
But rather instead it is the power of love rarely seen

Nostalgia For Guantanamo

Next on the series of challenges for Na/GloPoWriMo Day 11 is to write a poem pertinent to places of origin.  It seems to me that regardless of place of birth or my history of Hawai’i and California, the place that formed my character most and has kept me in the good company of a lifetime of greatly supportive and loving extended family was GTMO.

Chinook of the North

My apologies for falling asleep before writing the poem for yesterday’s challenge.    The challenge for Na/GloPoWriMo  Day 10 is to write a poem that references a local weather term.  After some thought and discussion, I have chose a type of wind that influences the weather from Hawai’i across to Canada starting at BC and moving across the Rockies…and well somehow the poem falls back on thoughts of someone becomes increasingly important to my soul.

Soul2Soul Bay - Maple Cottage On Beachfront

Chinook of the North
by Michael Romani

In a flourish of friendly, happy conversation
I speak to my love about our two nations
Seeking to learn about the weather
That one day I hope to get to know better

There with her voice so lovely Canuckian
And her insisting on calling me her American
Me insisting that I must be a United Statesian
The truth of the trick of being her man

She laughs playfully telling me that now
The place in which I had grown up somehow
Blows its pineapple breeze past her city
Warming up the Canadian Rockies so pretty

Sipping Tim Horton's so discretely
She whispers she'll always need me
And I am just glad to be her monkey
Who occasionally tells stories so funny

That my chinook of the north warms me
On the days that are gray and cloudy
I've never a lady so sweet and lovely
That she shines a smile that owns me

My snow eater melts my coldest moment
Giving me peace in my worse torment
She is my ocean child grown up as seen
Bringing out my best as a human being

I tell her I worry without a word
And she smiles and says we can be snowbirds
Turning my care into the wind
Knowing she is my lady, my lover, my friend

There is an orographic lifting in her rain shadow
One that has all the colors of the rainbow
And in it I am safe and warm and know her love
Always like a treasure given from the above

My Coastie and I find ourselves on the beach
Keeping each other's company deep within reach
As the stars fall down over the Pacific Ocean
As witnesses to the depth of our singular devotion

She is my indulgence under a coat of midnight
Stars shining bright nearly as the moon lights
Our way into each other's arms facing each other
There is no more perfect than this in one another

Snowfalls and the cold spells will never spawn
As much magic as waking up to her in my dawn
The ramparts of the mountains spread to Fraser Canyon
And I smile all the same with her as my companion
