An Indictment of the 20th Century

We have lived through the bloodiest and cruelest century of mankind’s history.  God surely must be crying.

Vibes Gallery - Make Art Not War

An Indictment of the 20th Century
by Michael Doyle

Einstein insisted God did not play with dice
While other insisted God needed no such advice
With so many changes as to cause disorder
Even revolutionaries have found a need for order

The Twentieth Century brought a new level of mayhem
Leaving humanity's prospects looking rather dim
In a clash of old and new, we have faced modernity
Knowing nothing resembling anything close to certainty

Twin pillars of disastrous pessimism
Gave birth to both communism and fascism
Both bringing new levels of man's destruction
Bringing our world to where it could barely function

Socialism has bred nothing short of calamity
Claiming the lives and souls from the face of humanity
World War Two did not end until Nineteen Ninety-One
Now humanity holds its breath as a pandemic has begun

The Twentieth Century was the bloodiest of history
Genocidal, homicidal outrages are its tearful legacy
Piece by piece of this horrifically long litany
Is and has been nothing short of shattering travesty

This breakdown of society and its feigned civility
Is the cultural course that fades our morality
Shaken and stirred beyond all sense of sensibility
Diametric in its opposition to all good is our legacy

So Much Sky

Ever been out in the middle of wilderness and realized the vastness of the universe and the smallness of humanity?

One Billion Rising Rising Park - We Gotta Get Out of This Place

So Much Sky
by Michael Doyle

So much sky
That a person might get lost
In a freedom one cannot buy
Gold does not pay the cost

Cast on a perilous journey
A path overgrown
Some say its our destiny
Despite rivers overflown

Hidden in the verity
Of half hidden reconnaissance
Is that quicksand of vanity
That too often loses brilliance

Into the confused alliances formed
Caught inside the perplexity
Of a hunger of wolves deformed
Into something resembling duplicity

A loneliness of minds interferes
In the compromises of promise
Played on in the poverty of fears
That only empties into things infamous

Thought For the Day: Music Is the Language of God

“The vibrations on the air are the breath of God speaking to man’s soul. Music is the language of God. We musicians are as close to God as man can be. We hear his voice, we read his lips, we give birth to the children of God, who sing his praise. That’s what musicians are.” – Ludwig van Beethoven

Happy St. Patrick’s Day 2020

Despite all that has come to pass it would be in my opinion almost sacrilegious not to wish all a Happy St. Patrick’s Day 2020!!

May God’s soft rain fall on you always to allow the flowers of your life to bloom into their rich fullness.  In dark times, may there always be a little light … even if only shone by yourself for the benefit of others.  And may there be love, hope, and faith in every moment of your lives!

Keep safe out there!!

Jamestown Remembered

I had the opportunity as a child to live in Virginia for a time.   There were three cities we visited in some sort of historical triangle:  Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown.  It would not be wrong to believe that viewing these historical places shaped the man I have been in my life.

Northern Shore - Ship Begins To Shape

Jamestown Remembered
by Michael Doyle

Surviving the tempest of the sea
They crossed to land hoping to be free
Where every man might rise to be
All the man he was born to be

It was to the colony of Jamestown
That they set their hope away from the Crown
Taking from the land its fair bounty
Standing as tall admirers of this land's majesty

Building a new world off the old world's dreams
Puzzled that truth is never what it seems
Despite all the tales that are solemnly told
The captains of industry chase after gold

The towns hoped for to rise from ambition
Would spring up from those beads of perspiration
From a hundred acres given for ancient dedication
The Virginia Company birthed a free nation

Pandemic 2020

The days are dark but we will get through this.

Pozciti Polska - Novel Coonavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic

Pandemic 2020
by Michael Doyle

Mass graves mark the passing through
Of the last major outbreak of flu
There are not moments relegated to history
But a devastating part of life's mystery

It has never been a matter of if but when
This sort of thing would pass through again
It only takes one person to start an outbreak
Just one flawed step to become a fatal mistake

For those who are concerned with human welfare
We shall recognize this as is worse than warfare
Despite our best attempts at immunization
Each human being has the potential for incubation

This is the underlying truth of our mortality
That our next breath may cause our own fatality
Influenza is nearly infinite in its variation
So too it is as to the risks of contamination

Novel viruses arise with no human immunity
So it has been in and for all of human history
Every such Goliath requires a David's sling
As a hope for all of us that it might bring

The arc of hope is a tale of universal cure
Being worked on globally that we might endure
The monster it seems is one of rapid mutation
Changing so rapidly as to defy any computation

Still the clock keeps ticking and is all too real
And all the research in the world fails to reveal
The answers needed now so desperately by many
We push on hard to find the answers, as if there are any

Fatalities are rising each and every single day
Rapidly progressing to the worse of us in every way
The truth of each day's light has it's telling say
When even atheists fall on their knees and pray
